It happened gradually. So gradual that by the time the people realized it, Mugine had managed to sink his fingers firmly in the earth. What had once been a verdant green land with healthy flora and fauna had become marshy bogs populated by various monsters and creatures.
And they were creeping further and further out as time went on.
Rivers and lakes started to get infested by these nasty mollusks that would latch on to anyone who dared try to fish, wash, or draw water from the once clean sources. Since the areas were far from civilization this endangered some people’s very way of life.
Even worse were the creatures that looked like a cross between catfish and crocodiles. Mud Lizards were very venomous creatures, their bites capable of rendering entire limbs useless. Their slick muddy bodies spreading the muck of the bogs further.
While the Mud Lizards and Biting Clams were relatively slow, vicious monsters called Aqua Dogs chased people mercilessly. They snapped and attacked at helpless humans on Mugine’s orders.
A few intrepid warriors banded together to fight back. They geared up and set forth into Mugine’s bogs. However Mugine’s Iron Knight Shells and Mugine himself made short work of the warriors, letting only a few go to spread the word.
“And that's the story,” Galan sighed quietly as he stood with the visitors to his village. He was a middle aged man wearing a bandana. Galan’s arm was wrapped from the tips of his fingers to his shoulder in bandages. The arm itself was hanging in a sling.
He was the owner of a small market in his village of Mirror Glen. Mirror Glen was populated with mostly farmers and fisher men. Trade was done through Galan's market, he would take the people's produce and catches to the next village over, trade for supplies and then return to Mirror Glen.
Mirror Pond had been where the fishermen had gone to catch various fish for Galan's market. It was also the main source of clean water the farmers used to irrigate their crops. However, Mud Fish from the Poison Bogs have spread into Mirror Pond and made it their home. They turned the once clear waters into a muddy slurry.
“The villagers of Kernia had to leave their homes, and we might be next at this rate,” Galan shook his head.
A woman with a round face, a matronly frame, and short curls moved to Galan and clung to his good side. It was his wife Palona, “Galan was one of the men in the group that went to clean Mirror Pond. But the Mud Fish that live there got him. They bit his arm and now he’s like this. He can hardly move it…”
Galan gave his wife a small reassuring squeeze and then turned towards the stranger he was speaking to, “We can’t provide much in a reward, but we’ll do anything we can if only you could clean Mirror Pond. Please, stranger, we’re desperate!”
