In the red and orange lit caverns of Namek's magma grottoes the young warrior known as Jhelks sat upon a small shelf of stone set in the grand cavern's wall. A cubbyhole formed out of the natural rock that had been eroded into shape by magma a unknown time long past, when the magma pool had sat at a higher elevation. Seated in a cross legged meditation pose upon the shallow shelf Jhelks watched other warriors undergo training and duels within the magma lit cavern. Jhelks watched with more than just his eyes however, the young Namekian reached out with his senses and felt the thrum of power from every soul within the cave. From the mightiest to the weakest powers Jhelks could feel them all, like the varying levels of warmth from candles with different wicks.
Among the Namekian's of the Dark Clan strength and power was the upmost sought after prize in life and to hide or mask ones strength was an act of cowardice. Yet Jhelks had learned in a recent raid upon the surface just how adaptable hiding ones power could be in combat. Remembering back to his fight with a human warrior, Jhelks was forced to admit that had he not used hostages to his advantage he would have been slain in that encounter. With the human masking his true strength Jhelks had entered a fight unprepared and unaware. Something he had very nearly suffered for with his life.
The encounter had left a resolve within Jhelks to learn such a power himself, but such teachings were unheard of in the caves beneath Namek's surface. The young warrior had even gone to see one of the elders of the Demon Temple for advice, only for the ageing Namekian to inform him that he could not help at this time. Left with little other course Jhelks sat upon his shelf and simply studied the energies around him. Searching for anything he could use to his advantage. Closing his eye to aid in focus, Jhelks saw each ki signature as a flickering flame. Some small as the head of a match, others bright as a bonfire. The warrior's own power was caught in between, a resolute torch of unwavering strength. "Challenging isn't it?" a sudden voice said so close by to the warrior that Jhelks snapped his eyes open and struggled to catch himself before jumping from his stone shelf into the magma below.
Hovering in the air before him Jhelks was greeted to the wizened features of the temple elder. The advanced aged Namekian was gaunt and skinny as can be, his green flesh wrinkled in excess. Yet a gentle smile lit his features beneath his droopy antenna, perhaps the only dark clan Namekian Jhelks had ever seen smile for unsinister reason. "How did you? Why didn't I sense your approach?" Jhelks asked in a flabbergasted flummox, which only made the temple elder chuckle. "I said I could not help you when we last spoke, not that I could not help you at all." the elder replied as he floated in the air with relaxed ease.
"You can suppress your energy. I should have known that you of all people would." Jhelks replied, realizing he still could not gauge the elders power. "Just how strong are you reallY?" he asked, once again bringing a chuckle, but no answers from the older Namek. Instead the wizened elder floated to an adjacent chubby set in the wall and found a comfortable way for him to set his old bones down for a rest upon the stone. "Young warrior, why do you wish to learn how to hide your power?" the elder asked, clearly expecting an answer. "Tactical advantage." Jhelks said without question, voicing something that was at least partially true. When the elder did not respond however Jhelks looked deeper inside himself for answers.
"To temper myself. Such control over my own power will help guide me to further heights, of both wisdom and strength." Jhelks said moments later with his eyes locked onto the magma pool rolling below his perch. "That my friend is a far more enlightened truth than what you said before." the elder replied, his wispy voice nearly lost among the sounds of training taking place all around them. "The key to suppressing your own power comes not in seeking strength over others, but in seeking strength within. It is for this reason our surface brothers excel at this skill, and why our dark brothers can't even use it. Legends say All Father Slug had to conquer himself before he could conquer all his many hordes." the elder stated.
Mewling the words about in his mind Jhelks once again closed his eyes and reached out with his senses. All throughout the cavern Jhelks saw the life force of others as flames on a wick, than he once again found his own. Focusing upon the torch that was his essence, Jhelks avoided his instinct to simply snuff that flame out. Before he had thought to be invisible was to have no fire within him at all. Now however the elders words had inspired the warrior and instead of seeking to snuff the torch Jhelks thought to reduce it in scale and heat.
Steadying his breathing the Namekian envisioned a torch recessing to that of a lantern, than he recessed further to a candle of soft fire. The warrior continued to lower his flame to the thickness of a match within his mind, mere embers that glowed where fire once blazed. Yet the suppression of power did not make Jhelks feel lacking. Instead the man felt as though he could erupt in energy at any moment, his power compacted to the size of sparks yet as deadly as the magma that washed beneath him this very moment. Opening his eyes once more Jhelks witnessed the elder leaning out from his chubby to shoot Jhelks a wink at his success. "I can't even sense you now. We'll make a proper fighter of you yet." the elder stated as he leaned back against the stone. Leaving Jhelks both elated and curious all at once.
