Hikaru slid her palm over the cool white clay of the namekian hut. She had built this place with her own two hands with Gastro and the other Namekians in the construction crew. She had gathered the clay and mixed it into the material mulché herself. With Gastro’s guidance she had formed the foundation and the frame. She had made the brick forms, and laid them. She had been with this home every step of the way.
It was small, but it was hers. It was more than enough for her. Hikaru didn’t need much at all…
“You don’t need to go, you know,” Mollau said behind her.
Hikaru turned and faced the healer, “I can’t impose on you forever…”
“It was no imposition,” Mollau shook his head lightly and gave Hikaru a warm grandfatherly smile, “I enjoyed having you with me.”
Hikaru gave the namekian a small, yet gentle, smile.
Mollau had been the first person she had known, after the mysterious Mamoru who had rescued her. He had been the one to nurse her back to health, and then invited her into his home. He had taught her the art of the very same healing he had used upon her.
Mollau had been her caretaker, her teacher… he had been her friend.
No.
He was her friend.
“I’ll still be by for lessons,” the human said.
Mollau laughed, his shoulders shaking softly, “I know, I know.”
But then he stepped up to Hikaru and placed a hand on her shoulder, his expression falling dark, “Just be sure you come by for lessons on healing, and not to be the one healed…”
Hikaru gave a tiny snort, “No promises.”
“Ugh…”
Mollau knew better than anyone how reckless Hikaru was. How much she disregarded her own safety. She not only threw herself in harm’s way for others, but she also worked her body to the point of near collapse in her training.
Maybe Mollau wouldn’t have to worry about being lonely with how often Hikaru will probably end up in the healing hut…
“Here, I have gifts for you,” Mollau moved to the small cart he had loaded with housewarming gifts.
Hikaru’s brow furrowed slightly. She had told Mollau she hadn’t needed so many gifts, but the elder man had insisted. In the end it had been easier to just let him have his way…
The healer lifted up a thick folded blanket from a pile of bedding, “It isn’t a proper bed with a frame and mattress, but I’ve gathered a futon for you. Help me get it inside.”
The bedding in the cart was surprisingly dense, and cumbersome. Hikaru brought it inside with Mollau and laid it next to the wall. He unfolded it and helped her make the bed with sheets, blankets, and pillows.
“Excellent. And if you need room, you can fold it for storage,” Mollau nodded his head approvingly, then left to go back to the cart.
Hikaru shook her head and stood up to follow him.
Over the next few hours Mollau had unloaded upon her a wash basin, kitchen supplies: bowls, plates, cups, knives, and more; a small sitting table with a set of cushions, and lastly a miniature Ajisa tree.
Mollau stood back and clapped his hands as if to clean them of non-existent dust, “Excellent.”
Hikaru stood back in quiet amazement, shaking her head. While the home may seem humble to the standards of others… for Hikaru it was practically extravagant.
“...thank you, Mollau,” Hikaru said quietly.
“It’s no-” Mollau began but then stopped when he looked at Hikaru and was caught off guard by the earnest look in her eyes. Instead his face melted into a warm smile that had began to occur more and more around her.
“You’re welcome, Hikaru…”
The old Namekian stretched and there was a soft popping noise, then he sighed in contentment. Mollau turned to the cart, “Now, if you’ll excuse me. I’ll need to return this.”
“I can do that…” Hikaru stepped towards the cart but stopped at a gesture from Mollau.
“No, no. I want you to settle in and get comfortable, alright? Then I need to return to the healer’s hut. We can meet again for your next lesson, hmm?” Mollau said.
“Mmm…” Hikaru said quietly as the elder namekian began pulling the cart away. Seeing Mollau go Hikaru felt… surprisingly lonely.
She shook her head and went inside. While Mollau had given her a set of kitchen supplies, it was still packed in a crate. She’d need a place to put them. Perhaps she could build some shelves from Mulché…
