Close your eyes,” Mollau intoned quietly. His instructions were the same every time, but it had become a part of the routine of the meditation, “Focus on your heart beat.”
Hikaru shut her vibrant crimson eyes, and did as she was instructed.
Thump-thump. Thump-thump.
Hikaru had been doing this meditation with Mollau for weeks now. At least once a day every day. She also had daily lessons with him as well.
Hikaru had expressed in interest in learning healing fairly early on in her stage. Hikaru expected Mollau to resist, that perhaps the healing techniques were secret. But instead he was all too happy to teach her.
There were two parts to the healing technique. One was the practical knowledge of anatomy. While there were many species and races amongst the cosmos, at a fundamental level, there would always be similarities. The more familiar one was with the makings of flesh and blood, the more easily one could fix it.
The other was the actual technique and usage of ki. To guide it into others you yourself need to be intimately familiar in your own essence. This was why she and Mollau meditated together everyday.
“Your heart is your center,” Mollau continued, “Feel the rhythm of your ki. The way it flows within you. As much a part of you as your blood and breath.”
Hikaru connected to the warmth deep within her. She had been able to control her ki for as long as she could remember. She had been taught how in her infancy. But while she was able to control it. This method required a deeper intimacy.
Thump-thump. Thump-thump.
“Breath in. Feel the air fill you,” Mollau instructed.
Hikaru took in a deep breath through her nose for a count of 7, as she had been taught. Her chest expanded as the air flowed into her lungs.
“Savor it,” Mollau said, “Then let it go.”
Hikaru held the breath for a count of 7, and then exhaled through her mouth at another count of 7. Then she began the process again.
The human and the namekian sat together in quiet meditation for a few minutes. The room was silent except for their careful breathing. Hikaru’s thoughts drifted away. She focused only on her heart, her breath, and the flow of her ki. She focused simply on just being.
Soon enough Mollau continued the lesson to the next step.
“Connect to the ki inside of you,” he said, “Do you feel its warmth?”
The question was rhetorical. Hikaru needn’t respond, so she didn’t.
“Spread outward. Search for the warmth outside of you,” he continued, “Feel it in me.”
Gently Hikaru coaxed her senses outward. She felt as if she herself was reaching out. But it was beyond the simple reach of arms. Beyond the touch of fingertips. It was more. It was deeper. It was her.
Radiating forth was another warmth. Another ki. So different, and yet so much the same. Mollau’s ki was a gentle pulse. It flowed through him as her ki flowed through her. Hikaru touched his warmth with her own. Their energies mixed, like two different waters flowing into the same stream.
Hikaru felt her ki pulse through Mollau, and his through her in turn. When they had first started this practice it had felt… invasive. Foreign. Alien. She had instinctually balked from the sensation.
But over time, and with much gentle practice, Hikaru had learned to accept the touch. Rather than invasive, it was now intimate. It was much like a dance of the two energies. A harmony. It was now a comforting sensation.
“We are both energy,” Mollau’s words came through not just her ears, but also through her very being, “We are all energy. All people are connected by the same essence. Just look.”
Originally Mollau had, had to guide Hikaru’s ki. But now, Hikaru was able to explore freely. Explore out to the vastness of the world, and to the many pools of life that existed beyond herself. She touched the ki of another. A feather touch. The barest of grazes. And then she drifted on to another.
All through the exercise, she kept her steady breathing. The movement instinctual. Breath in: one, two, three, four, five, six, seven. Hold: one, two, three, four, five, six, seven. Exhale: one, two, three, for, five, six, seven.
Thump-thump. Thump-thump.
“Not just you and I. And not just the others,” Mollau’s words flowed through her, much like his ki, “We share the same essence, the same life, with the creatures of the earth. The creatures of the sky. The creatures of the sea. We are one and the same.”
Carefully Hikaru focused on the spread of her ki. She flowed through the ether and felt the cotton soft touches of ki that resided in the animals around them. The frogs that bounded in the grass. The fish that swam in the river. The birds that glided in the sky. Their essence was smaller, but no less complex in the flow of life within them.
“We are the same.”
And in those words she felt the truth of them. They were the same. She and Mollau. The two of them and the others of the village. All of them, and with everything beyond. They were all alive.
Hikaru and Mollau meditated at this deeper level for the rest of the hour. They mingled with other lives. It wasn’t that they could see their thoughts, or feel the same physical sensations. It wasn’t mental or physical. It was deeper than that. Something more fundamental that if someone asked Hikaru to describe she would be unable to. There weren’t words that could express it. One had to experience it for themselves.
And that had been what Mollau had been teaching her these past several weeks. How to feel that exact sensation. One without words. He had needed to guide her, to show her the path. And now she knew it. She could find it for herself.
